Lesson 10 Challenge: India
India is the 7th largest country by land size, but it has the largest population in the world — nearly 20% of all people on Earth live in India!
Compare this with Russia: Russia has more than 10% of the world's land, but only about 2% of its population. India has about 2% of the world's land, but nearly 20% of its population.
This introduces an important concept: population density — how tightly or loosely people are packed into an area. Of course, density assumes an even distribution; in reality, people cluster in cities while rural areas are more spread out.
Discussion: Why do you think Russia and India have such different population densities?
The Smallest Country
Italy is easy to spot on a map because of its recognizable boot shape, located in the Mediterranean Sea.
Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. It's located inside Rome, the capital of Italy. Vatican City is so small that you can't even see it on a world map — it's a historical oddity with a fascinating story.
Now you know the biggest countries, the smallest country, and how to find Italy!
